How much does a fractional CMO cost?
In the US, retainers for a fractional CMO run from about $5,000 to $26,000 a month, and hourly rates from $174 to $283. Most engagements are one to three days a week on a monthly retainer. A full-time CMO costs $270,000 to $320,000 a year once benefits, payroll taxes and recruiting fees are included. Two days a week comes to $129,000 to $212,000 a year, so a fractional CMO is cheaper. Four days a week comes to $258,000 or more, which is where a full-time hire makes sense.

| Europe | $4,000 to $17,000 | $135 to $193 | $1,100 to $1,500 |

Fractional CMO pricing models
Monthly retainer
You pay a fixed monthly fee for an agreed number of days a week. It suits ongoing leadership: running the team, owning the plan, reporting to the CEO and the board.
Day rate
You pay per day worked. It suits variable workloads and short, intense periods such as a launch or a board-prep month.
Hourly
Common for light advisory work: a weekly call, reviewing plans, coaching a marketing lead. Hourly billing gets expensive and fragmented once the work involves managing people.
Project or diagnostic
A fixed fee for a defined piece of work, often two to three weeks: a funnel and channel audit, a positioning review, a go-to-market plan. Starting with one before a retainer lets both sides check the fit before committing to months.
What drives the price
- Days per week. This is the biggest factor. One day and three days a week are different jobs.
- Scope. Advising a founder costs less than running a team, agencies and a media budget.
- Stage and complexity. A Series B company with a team of ten and several channels needs more than a seed company picking its first channel.
- Sector depth. Experience in your category, buyer and sales motion commands a higher rate.
- Market. US rates are the highest published. UK and EU rates are lower and less often published.
Fractional CMO cost by SaaS stage
| Stage | Typical scope | Typical time | Typical monthly cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seed, pre-PMF | Positioning or channel sprint, founder advisory | A fixed project or a few hours a week | Project fee, or $174 to $209 an hour |
| Series A | ICP and positioning, first channels, first hires, reporting | 1 to 2 days a week | $6,000 to $15,000 |
| Series B | Channel mix, CAC payback, sales handoff, leading a team | 2 to 3 days a week | $13,000 to $24,000 |
| Series C and later | Interim cover while hiring a full-time CMO | 3 or more days a week, for a fixed period | Above $22,000 |
What each budget buys
The low end, about $5,000 to $9,000 a month
One day a week or an advisory scope. Strategy, priorities and a weekly working session with the founder and the marketing lead. The team executes with little day-to-day management from the CMO.
The middle, about $11,000 to $18,000 a month
This is the US midpoint, for two days a week. The fractional CMO leads the team, manages agencies, owns reporting and sits in leadership meetings.
Above $18,000 a month
Three days a week or more, with close to full-time responsibility. At this level, price it against a full-time or interim hire.
How many hours a fractional CMO works
Usually one to three days a week, which is 8 to 24 hours. Typical weekly hours range from 5 to 35. Advisory roles sit at the low end, and leading a team with agencies and a launch sits at the top.
Fractional vs full-time CMO: the real cost
What a full-time CMO costs
Published base salaries for US CMOs range from $174,000 to $225,908. Add bonus, equity, benefits, payroll taxes and a recruiting fee, and the total comes to $270,000 to $320,000 a year.
Break-even
Using US day rates of $1,400 to $2,300 and 46 working weeks a year:
| Days per week | Days per year | Annual cost |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 46 | $64,000 to $106,000 |
| 2 | 92 | $129,000 to $212,000 |
| 3 | 138 | $193,000 to $317,000 |
| 4 | 184 | $258,000 to $423,000 |
At two days a week a fractional CMO is cheaper at every rate. At four days a week even the lowest day rate comes close to a full-time CMO's total cost. If you need someone four days a week, hire full-time.
What the comparison leaves out
A full-time hire takes months to find and costs more to exit. A fractional CMO starts within weeks and can be stopped with a short notice period. A full-time CMO is there every day, builds the team for the long term and keeps what the company learns. Read the fractional CMO vs agency, full-time and interim CMO guide for the full comparison.
Costs on top of the fee
Plan for these on top of the fee:
- The execution budget: media, content production, tools, events
- The team or agencies who do the work
- Recruiting costs if the CMO hires marketers
- Founder and team time in the first month for onboarding and data access
When a cheaper option makes more sense
- Pre-product-market fit, a fixed-scope project or advisory hours cost less than a retainer and fit the problem better.
- If strategy is clear and the gap is execution, an agency or a senior marketer is the better use of the money.
- If you need four or more days a week, a full-time hire costs about the same.
